Day 8 at Wimbledon 2024 delivered a combination of tense comebacks, young advancements, and leading performances. Novak Djokovic survived a turbulent start to keep his record for title on, whereas 18-year old Mira Andreeva scripted her name in history by storming into her first Wimbledon quarterfinal.
Djokovic survived a tough beginning to beat Alex de Minaur and entered his 16th Wimbledon quarterfinal on Monday. The 38-year-old seeking a record 25th Grand Slam, lost the first 1-6 but came back claiming the next three sets of 6-4, 6-4 6-4. He will now face Italy’s Flavio Flavio in the next round.
Despite initial error and visible frustration, Djokovic turned the match around late in the fourth set, bagging five straight games. “It was a big, big relief,’’ he stated, as reported by Associated Press. Also, the ones who made advances were Ben Shelton, who defeated Lorenzo Sonego, and Jannik Sinner, who made further progress as Grigor Dimitrov retired injured. In women’s singles, 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva registered her name as the youngest Wimbledon quarter-finalist since 2007 after beating Emma Navarro. Meanwhile, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek also moved ahead with a dominant win over Clara Tauson
