A short-lived ban on social media platforms in Nepal prompted violent demonstrations in parts of the country. Led predominantly by Generation Z, enraged by corruption, nepotism and a ban on popular social media platforms, the movement turned violent on Tuesday. The protesters set fire to parliament buildings, the Prime Minister’s residence and Supreme Court, among other government offices. Over 20 people were killed and hundreds were injured as security forces clashed with demonstrators. The protests led to severe disruption of daily life in Nepal as the government had to shut down airports for limited hours following PM KP Sharma Oli’s resignation.
