Cravings for sweets, chips, or rice, especially after meals, may not be just regular habits or emotional urges. Dr Sudhir Kumar, neurologist at Apollo Hospitals, while in an interaction with South First revealed that these cravings usually indicate that the body’s nutritional requirements are not fulfilled. Chocolate cravings signify a lack of magnesium, whereas continuous hunger for sweets could signal Vitamin B deficiencies or insulin resistance.
Nutritionist Swetha Adarsh, while speaking to the South First, explained that the cravings for salty, sour, or carbohydrate-loaded foods may be associated with deficiencies in Vitamin C, sodium, and serotonin imbalances. Unusual behaviour with children who eat soil could be related to a shortage of zinc or iron, as stated by health coach Shahsikant Iyengar. Another major factor that can escalate cravings by impacting hunger-regulating hormones is sleep deprivation.
Experts highlighted that while occasional cravings are normal but repeated or intense urges may require medical attention to reveal the real health issues.
