In Saudi Arabia, officials saw the crescent moon on Sunday night marking the start of the holy fasting month of Ramadan for many of the world’s 1.8 billion Muslims.
Saudi Arabia is home to the holiest sites in Islam, Mecca and Medina. Spotting the moon on Sunday night means Monday is the first day of the fast.
The sacred month marks a period of family get-togethers, religious reflection, and giving across the Muslim world.
Immediately, multiple Gulf Arab nations, as well as Sudan, Egypt, Syria, and Yemen followed the announcement to confirm they as well would begin fasting on Monday. Muslims in North America will also begin their fast on Monday. Leaders across the world shared messages of congratulations.
