Some of the Kabali shows started as early as 3 a.m. , while others at 6 a.m., but the fans were still quite happy to see that the tickets were available at a reasonable Rs 100, even though some were priced as high as Rs 500. The Kabali version dubbed in Hindi has released in over 1,000 screens in north India. Rajinikanth's Kabali has clashed with Irrfan Khan's 'Madaari' at the box office, but the latter is not expected to be too big a bother for the southern superstar. (Photo: PTI)

Some of the theatres here looked like they wanted to compete with those in Chennai or Bangalore by putting up oversized cut-outs of the actor, which went down very well with fans who could be seen genuflecting before them or otherwise paying obeisance. Also, the number of shows may well have been over 100 on day 1. (Photo: AP)

Some of the hottest merchandise in Mumbai became the humble T-shirt today, except for the fact that they were mostly emblazoned with Rajinikant's Kabali look in various poses, with fancy and colourful graphics. As far as occupancy rates go, the level reached was anything under 50% to over 70% depending on the locality. The cash registers were definitely ringing, giving Rajinikanth and the filmmakers reason to relieve their anxiety. (Photo: PTI)

However, most analysts were not willing to guess exactly how well Kabali will do today, preferring to stick to making an analysisi of the southern markets. In this vein, distributor Akshaye Rathi said, "'Kabali is like a hurricane. Rajinikanth is a legend and shows are sold out till Monday-Tuesday in the south. Kabali' is doing phenomenally well in the south.”. Rathi added, "Kabali is doing reasonably well in north with 30-40% occupancy rate. In Tamil Nadu it is housefull". (Photo: PTI)
