-    University Grants Commission (UGC) has warned leading educational institutes like Symbiosis University, Teri University, Manipal University among many others of losing their ‘deemed to be’ status if they fail to comply with UGC’s directive to drop ‘university’ from their names. UGC has given them deadline till today evening to remove the title of ‘university’ from the institute’s name where thousands of students are enrolled. The higher education regulator issued two notices on Wednesday to 29 such institutes and has asked them to email the compliance report by 4 pm on Thursday, November 30 or ‘necessary action would be initiated against the institution which may include recommending withdrawal of the declaration’. In a circular issued by UGC on November 10, as many as 123 education facilities of higher education which are deemed to be universities to stop using the word ‘university’ in their names. 
-    The higher education regulator also through the notice directed the institutes to use ‘deemed to be’ with the institute name within parenthesis. The November 10 and Wednesday’s directives stemmed from the November 3 Supreme Court order asking the UGC to direct deemed-to-be-universities from refraining to use the word ‘university’ in their names. -    In the two notices issued by UGC, the first listed Pune’s Symbiosis International University, the Bengaluru-based Christ University and Jain University asking them to change their names. The second notice had Manipal University, Delhi’s Teri University, KLE University in Belagavi and 19 other institutes. Teri, which was earlier known as Teri School of Advanced Studies will revert back to the previous name with which they started back in 1999. -    The education facilities said that they were taking time as they had to go through name approval process emphasising that their status as deemed to be universities has not changed. The deemed status is provided to the institutes which does quality work in a specified stream and cannot be named as universities as their work is not multidisciplinary but the deemed tag would bring them benefits of a university.
