QS University University Rankings for BRICS: Great news for Indian students! The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) BRICS University rankings were released yesterday featuring the top 300 varsities from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Two Indian varsities made the cut in the top 10 universities while many others also features in the rest of the list – these are IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore. The BRICS ranking has been compiled using eight different indicators, including the ratio of faculty to students, the proportion of academic staff with a PhD and the institution’s reputation among academics and employers. 7 out of 10 varsities among the top 10 universities are from China, while 2 are from India and 1 is from Russia. 1. Tsinghua University: Founded in 1911, Tsinghua University is a public research university which is consistently ranked as one of the best universities in China. The university currently has 14 schools and 56 departments. It has faculties in science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art. The university is known for fostering talent and scientific research, with 149 key research institutes, including 13 state key laboratories. Tsinghua’s campus, located in northwest Beijing, has been featured among the most beautiful in the world.

2. Peking University: Peking University is one of the largest and most prestigious research universities in China and a member of the C9 League, the Chinese equivalent to the Ivy League. The university campus is located on the former grounds of the Qing Dynasty imperial gardens, and the grounds contain many historical buildings, making it one of the most picturesque campuses in the country.

3. Fudan University: Founded in 1905 as Fudan Public School, Fudan University is located in Shanghai, China, and is considered one of the country’s most selective universities. The university has produced a number of notable alumni in Chinese government and politics, medicine, the sciences and humanities.

University of Science and Technology of China: Ranked within the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings, the University of Science and Technology in China (USTC) is a national research university located in Hefei, eastern China. USTC was established in 1958 in Beijing by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), in a strategic act by the Chinese government to help meet the country’s science and technology needs.

5. Lomonosov Moscow State University: Established in 1755, Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) is the highest-ranked university in Russia, and is consistently ranked within the global top 150 of the QS World University Rankings. One of Russia’s oldest and most respected institutions, MSU’s main building is the tallest educational building in the world.

Zhejiang University: Established in September 1998, Zhejiang University was formed on the basis of the amalgamation of the four former individual universities, namely Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University, which were all located in the garden city of Hangzhou.

7. Shanghai Jiao Tong University: Founded in 1896, the Chinese university Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the most prestigious universities in China. The main language of instruction is Mandarin, although a few undergraduate and postgraduate courses are taught in English and joint-run with English and American universities.

8. Nanjing University: Nanjing University is one of China's key comprehensive universities and it functions directly under the Ministry of Education. It is located in the ancient capital of six dynasties — Nanjing. The University dates back to 1902 when Sanjiang Normal School was founded, and then evolved as Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, the Fourth Zhongshan University, and National Central University.

9. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay): Established in 1958, the second of its kind, IIT Bombay was the first to be set up with foreign assistance. The institute is recognised worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research. The varsity jumped from rank 13 to rank 9 this year.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was founded in 1909 as a result of the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Government of India, and the Maharaja of Mysore. In 1886, Jamsetji Tata conceived of a university of science that will work for the benefit of India, and in 1898 created an endowment for establishing such an institution. The varsity this year saw a fall in its ranking among the top BRICS universities from rank 6 to rank 10.
