After Sushma Swaraj speech, Pakistan calls off talks with India

Ending the suspense, Pakistan called off the Indo-Pak NSA-level talks, hours after India made it clear that discussions on Kashmir and a meeting with separatists will not be acceptable. "Pakistan reiterates that the scheduled NSA level talks cannot be held on the basis of the preconditions set by India," a statement by the Pakistani Foreign Office said. This came in the wake of External Affairs Minsiter Sushma Swaraj saying, "If Pakistan NSA wants to come he is welcome. But talks will only be on terrorism – there will be no talks on Kashmir." 'ModiGate': PM protecting Lalit Modi, says Rahul Gandhi
Calling it "ModiGate", Rahul Gandhi today accused Narendra Modi of "protecting" Lalit Modi and asked the Prime Minister to sack External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for her help to the former IPL Chairman in obtaining British travel documents. "It is not a question of Sushma ji resigning, PM Modi ji should sack Sushma Swaraj ji from the Govt," Gandhi said on the hashtag #ModiGate on Twitter. Addressing media in Chhattisgarh, the Congress Vice President recalled Modi as saying that he was a protector and he was the person who will get back black money from outside. "Mr Lalit Modi is a symbol of Black Money from outside. Now Mr Modi through Sushma Swaraj is protecting him. What is this?" he asked. Replying to a question about BJP backing Swaraj, Rahul Gandhi said,"Off course the party will stand behind Sushma Swarajji. The party is Mr Modi. Mr Modi is standing behind Mr Modi. Who is Sushma Swaraj. Sushma Swaraj is a minor minister and she means nothing in this government. There is only one man who is running this government and he is Narendra Modi and Narendra Modi should stop protecting Lalit Modi."

Also read: Lalit Modi-Sushma Swaraj row: AAP leader Ashutosh sees ‘conspiracy’ in case

Sushma Swaraj-Lalit Modi row: Kirti Azad turns to Arun Jaitley for wider IPL 2009 probe
Murmurs within the Bharatiya janata Party (BJP) over the row involving Sushma Swaraj came into the open with a party MP from Bihar asking Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for his opinion on what he thought of probing those who had approved the holding of IPL tournament in South Africa in 2009. "@LalitKModi being probed by #ED. Who were d members of #BCCI #EC who approved #IPL IN #SA, Shd they 2 not be probed? What say @arunjaitley," said Kirti Azad in a tweet as the controversy raged over External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj helping Lalit Modi, former IPL Commissioner, in getting him travel documents. "#BJPs #AsteenKaSaanp & #Arnab conspire against BJP leaders. Guess the snake? I Stand With SushmaSwaraj," he had said on Twitter. Sushma Swaraj’s disclosure sounds like case of ‘Modi helping Modi', says Congress
Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said that Sushma Swaraj’s acknowledgement of the role played by her office in helping former IPL chairman Lalit Modi in receiving the travel documents sounds like a case of ‘Modi helping Modi’. “This is extremely serious, grave in nature and reflects gross impropriety on the part of the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. Allegations that Sushma Swaraj and UK MP Keith Vaz helped Lalit Modi, against whom a red corner notice was issued by the ED, are indeed shocking. This makes Sushma Swaraj's position untenable,” Surjewala said. “She needs to resign in the highest of moral standards. It also raises questions. Why was the Government of India and its External Affairs Ministry helping Modi who is an ED accused and against whom a red corner notice has been issued? Was [Prime Minister] Modi helping Modi?” he added.

Also read: Lalit Modi-Sushma Swaraj row: AAP leader Ashutosh sees ‘conspiracy’ in case

Centre backs Sushma Swaraj in Lalit Modi row
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that the PM Narendra Modi-led govt stands with Sushma Swaraj, who took a humanitarian approach and helped former IPL chairman Lalit Modi receive travel documents despite the red corner notice against him still in effect. "Sushma Swaraj ji has done the right thing. A person with humanitarian perspective should take the same steps. She had only told the British High Commissioner that if the United Kingdom's rules allowed him to help [Lalit Modi] then India would raise no objections. We justify her actions and the government is completely with her on her stand," Singh said.

Also read: Lalit Modi-Sushma Swaraj row: AAP leader Ashutosh sees ‘conspiracy’ in case

On the Sushma Swaraj-Lalit Modi row, PM Narendra Modi needs to take stand, says AAP
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi needs to make it clear if he wants External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who has admitted to helping former IPL chairman Lalit Modi in securing the travel documents, to continue being a part of his Cabinet. "After Sushma Swarajji has admitted her fault, this is an open and shut case. The question is if the Prime Minister wants her to continue in the Cabinet or not. The Prime Minister should answer to this question. Dawood Ibrahim is also an Indian; if something happens with his family, will Sushma Swaraj help him out?" asked AAP spokesperson Ashutosh.

Also read: Lalit Modi-Sushma Swaraj row: AAP leader Ashutosh sees ‘conspiracy’ in case

Now, RSS defends Sushma Swaraj in Lalit Modi row
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Sunday came to the rescue of Sushma Swaraj, who is under sharp criticism for helping controversial Indian Premier League (IPL) founder Lalit Modi with his travel documents, and said that the External Affairs Minister would never compromise with nationalism and patriotism. “I know Sushma Swaraj for a long time…I can say that she is a nationalist and a patriotic woman. She has never compromised with nationalism and patriotism. She is full of human values. Whatever action she takes these, they are based on these (nationalism and patriotism). Those accusing her should look within themselves, they cannot establish something which is not true,” RSS leader Indresh Kumar said.

Also read: Lalit Modi-Sushma Swaraj row: AAP leader Ashutosh sees ‘conspiracy’ in case

Mayawati’s BSP likely to raise Sushma Swaraj, Lalit Modi’s travel papers controversy in Parliament
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday hinted that her party would raise the ongoing row over External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj helping former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi with his travel documents in Britain in the upcoming session of Parliament and said that a through probe must be done to get to the truth of the matter. “I don’t have complete information about this issue. This is a matter of thorough investigation. When the report will come and when the Parliament session will resume, this issue will be taken up there as well,” Mayawati told the media here. “We would like the truth to come out following the investigation and it will be better to come to any conclusion on this matter after the investigation (is complete),” Mayawati added.

Also read: Lalit Modi-Sushma Swaraj row: AAP leader Ashutosh sees ‘conspiracy’ in case

With sting in the tail, Amit Shah defends Sushma Swaraj in Lalit Modi row
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah defended Sushma Swaraj for helping former IPL chairman Lalit Modi receive travel documents, while taking a jibe at the Congress for allowing other fugitives to escape the country. "Sushma Swaraj ji has already made her stand clear via Twitter. The matter is quite simple. An Indian national had asked Sushma Swarajji for her help so that his wife could undergo treatment. Sushma ji talked to a British MP to request that the national be helped if Britain's rules permit the same," Shah said. "I cannot understand why such a big controversy is being created. This is not a matter of moral ground. This is not similar to [Bofors scandal accused Ottavio] Quattrocchi or [former Union Carbide Corporation CEO Warren] Anderson being allowed to escape India. Some people are trying to turn this into a political matter, but their expectations are useless," he added.

Also read: Lalit Modi-Sushma Swaraj row: AAP leader Ashutosh sees ‘conspiracy’ in case

Digvijay Singh calls for Sushma Swaraj’s resignation on ‘moral grounds’ in Lalit Modi row
Congress party general secretary Digvijay Singh on Sunday called for External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to hand in her resignation on ‘moral grounds’, after she admitted that she had helped expedite the travel documents of former Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi, despite the red alert issued by the government. “I respect Sushma Swaraj and I did not expect this from her. This whole situation is very serious, where the government is helping someone who has been proved guilty. The government should come clear on this issue,” Digvijay Singh said. “I appeal to her to resign on moral grounds,” he added.

Also read: Lalit Modi-Sushma Swaraj row: AAP leader Ashutosh sees ‘conspiracy’ in case

Sushma Swaraj lands in controversy for helping Lalit Modi
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was on Sunday at the centre of a major row over helping scam-tainted former IPL chief Lalit Modi to obtain British travel documents. The genesis of the Sushma Swaraj-Lalit Modi controversy was disclosure of emails showing that she had spoken to Indian-origin British MP Keith Vaz favouring the grant of documents to Lalit Modi to go to Portugal. Lalit Modi, who is wanted in India, has made London his home since 2010 to avoid a probe for alleged forex violations in the IPL T20 cricket tournament held in South Africa in 2009. The previous UPA govt had revoked his passport and had pressed for his extradition. Leaked emails indicate that Vaz cited Sushma Swaraj’s name to put pressure on UK’s top immigration official to grant British travel papers to Lalit Modi, who subsequently got the documents in less than 24 hours. Vaz also offered to help Sushma Swaraj’s nephew Jyotirmay Kaushal to apply for a British law degree course, the report said.

Also read: Lalit Modi-Sushma Swaraj row: AAP leader Ashutosh sees ‘conspiracy’ in case
