When it is launched on October 26, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno will take on the highly successful Hyundai Elite i20, the new Honda Jazz and the Volkswagen Polo – as can be gauged, the competition, which is already fierce, will get worse and that may well be good news for customers as prices may actually fall as carmakers target, or defend, market share. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno, which has high localisation levels of 99% to begin with, is expected to be priced from Rs 5.5 lakh onwards – close to the base variants of Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz, Fiat Punto EVO and Volkswagen Polo. The Baleno is Maruti Suzuki's first premium hatchback and here we compare the technical specifications of the Baleno with the Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and others: (CarDekho) -
Although the premium end of the market has never been Maruti Suzuki’s strength area, the company has tasted some success with the Maruti S-Cross – at least in the way the brand is being perceived by some customers. Like the S-Cross, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno will also be sold only through the company’s premium sales channel, the Nexa. However, it should be remembered that it was Maruti that had introduced India’s first premium hatch the iconic Zen with a 1000 cc engine and then the Swift, and it was the Swift that started the trend and people began accepting hatches with premium price tags. But that is all history, as Hyundai raised the ante with the i20, spoiling the masses with features and Elite i20 has blown away people with its jaw dropping European looks while continuing the pedigree of the FirstGen hatch. So, Maruti Suzuki decided to develop something to kill Hyundai’s flagship hatch – the Elite i20 and Baleno was born, borrowing the name from a discontinued sedan. Moreover, they are also following the same footsteps like the Korean, Hyundai rolled out the second generation i20 aka Elite i20 in the country before the rest of the world. (CarDekho)

Maruti Suzuki introduced Baleno as a premium sedan in the domestic market years back but later stopped its production. Now, the company is driving it back as a premium hatchback. It will be a 'Made-in-India' car and will be exported to over hundred countries in Europea and Latin America. Stating that the premium hatchback segment was growing at a rate of 20 per cent year-on-year, the company would sell Baleno as the second product from Nexa outlets. (CarDekho)
