Vikram Ghatge, founder of Shree Chhattrapati Shahu Cooperative Sugar Factory in Kolhapur and known for his work in Maharashtra’s cooperative sugar sector, died of heart attack on Monday morning. He was 66.

He is survived by his wife, son, daughter and brother.

Ghatge, a direct descendant of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, was known for his exemplary management of the cooperative sugar mill in Kolhapur that won several state and national awards. The mill is known for its excellent technical and financial efficiency and for paying the highest price to the cane farmers in Kolhapur.

Maharashtra cooperation  minister Chandrakant Patil termed Ghatge’s death a big loss for the country’s cooperative sector. His mill has served as a model for the industry in terms of efficient management and is among the highest payers of FRP. he said.

Ghatge was the chairman, Maharashtra State Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories, Mumbai (2005-06).
