Samsung has launched its flagship Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge in India. The phones will be available in stores from April 10.
The Korean electronics giant also announced that it would soon manufacture both the flagship smartphones at its Noida facility. “We will start manufacturing both the devices at our Noida facility within a couple of months. These units will be mostly for domestic consumption,” said Asim Warsi, VP, Mobile and IT, Samsung India.
Both the smartphones come in three storage options — 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB. The Samsung Galaxy S6 will be available at R49,900 (32 GB), R55,900 (64GB), R61,900 (128GB) while the Galaxy S6 Edge costs R58,900 (32 GB), R64,900 (64 GB) and R70,900 (128 GB).
The company has three R&D centres in the country and around 10,000 employees. It’s Bengaluru R&D facility played a major role in providing software features related to multimedia, camera and internet browser in the new flagship devices.
Both Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge share similar specifications apart from the dual curved screen in the high-end Edge version. These devices will take on Apple’s new iPhones in the premium smartphone category.
However, customers should not expect a drop in the prices with Samsung manufacturing its new flagships locally. “We have been manufacturing over seven years in India and we see that the said pricing will stay for a significant period of time to come forward,” said Warsi.
