WhatsApp frequently releases updates for several reasons, each aimed at enhancing user experience, improving security, fixing bugs, and staying competitive in the messaging app market. In a recent update to the WhatsApp Business beta for Android (version 2.23.24.21), it has been unveiled that WhatsApp, along with Google, is set to discontinue the provision of unlimited storage quota for WhatsApp backups.

“As an important heads up, WhatsApp backups on Android will soon start counting toward your Google Account cloud storage limit, similar to how WhatsApp backups are handled on other mobile platforms. This change will first start rolling out to WhatsApp Beta users starting in December 2023, then gradually to all WhatsApp users on Android starting early next year,” Google wrote in a blog post.

Starting December 2023, WhatsApp Beta users will experience the shift, followed by all Android users in early 2024. Backups will count toward the 15GB free storage, shared across Drive, Gmail, and Photos. Users reaching the limit will have to free up space to continue backups or explore Google One for additional storage. The transition aims to align Android backup with other platforms, enhancing reliability and security. This transition, brings Android in line with iOS backup practices, indicates a significant shift in the backup experience for users.

Users on both platforms will have the added benefit of utilising 15GB of free storage at no cost. This likely implies an integration with cloud storage services, such as Google Drive for Android users, allowing them to back up their WhatsApp data more seamlessly and take advantage of the allocated free storage space.

However, users will still have the option to back up their data at no additional cost within the 15GB of free cloud storage included with their Google Account. For those who exceed this limit, freeing up space by deleting unnecessary chats or media is advised. Alternatively, users can opt for additional storage by subscribing to a Google One plan, with the most affordable option offering 100GB for $1.99 per month.

Note that if you have a Google Workspace subscription through work or school, Google informs that your storage quota is not impacted at this time.
