WhatsApp is set to introduce a voice transcription feature in the near future, as reported by WABteaInfo, indicating that the messaging platform is in the process of developing a function to transcribe voice messages.

Reportedly found within the app’s code, this upcoming feature is anticipated to be released in forthcoming updates.

As per the media reports, the voice transcription feature will enable WhatsApp users to convert their voice messages into text format. To utilise this feature, users will be required to download around 150MB of additional data for enabling end-to-end encrypted transcriptions. WhatsApp plans to leverage the speech recognition capabilities of devices to generate these transcripts, ensuring that the transcription process occurs locally on the user’s device. The platform aims to maintain end-to-end encryption and protect user privacy.

After the additional package is downloaded, WhatsApp will likely integrate transcriptions into message bubbles, facilitating easy reading of voice messages even in scenarios where audio playback is not feasible.

“This feature not only enhances accessibility for users with hearing impairments but also caters to users in noisy environments or situations where listening to audio may not be feasible. In addition, users will have the convenience of transcribing voice messages when they receive lengthy voice notes, which they may not have the time or inclination to listen to in their entirety,” said the report.
