WhatsApp, a prominent player in the messaging and communication space owned by Meta, has announced a series of major updates to its calling features, positioning itself as a formidable competitor to platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. These enhancements are set to roll out in the coming weeks, the company announced in a blog post.
Contrary to previous update wherein only the screen could be shared but there was no audio support, users can now share their screens along with audio. This feature is set to rival similar functionalities offered by Zoom and Teams.
WhatsApp has also increased the participant limit for video call. The new update allows for up to 32 participants on a video call, significantly boosting the capacity for group interactions. This positions WhatsApp again as a strong contender against Zoom and Teams, which are widely used for large group meetings and conferences.
The speaker spotlight feature automatically highlights and positions the active speaker first on the screen, enhancing clarity and focus during discussions. This improvement aims to offer a more organised and user-friendly experience, akin to features found on Zoom and Teams.
WhatsApp recently also launched the MLow codec ensures better call reliability and clarity. Mobile users will benefit from enhanced noise and echo cancellation, making it easier to communicate in noisy environments. Additionally, video calls will now offer higher resolution for users with faster internet connections, ensuring crisp and clear visuals. These updates ensure WhatsApp can compete with the high-quality audio and video standards set by Zoom and Teams.
