Things don’t seem to look good for the iPhone Air. From the very early weeks of its arrival in Apple Stores, the Air was struggling to find customers. While experts and analysts considered hesitation for people adopting an iPhone of a new kind, the weeks following the launch haven’t been observed to be kind for the slimmest iPhone on the table. Since Apple has to run a business and losses aren’t tolerated, the brand has apparently cut down on production drastically.
Apple has now dramatically cut down on the production of the iPhone Air, with insiders suggesting a drop of up to 80 per cent. That’s staggering considering the high hopes of encouraging Apple’s premium customers to go for an iPhone that’s simply slim. While the Air has an entire year to change its fortune, customers are considering the slightly more premium Pro and Pro Max variants over this new-spec iPhone.
iPhone Air production cut down significantly
According to a Macrumors report, including Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has instructed suppliers to drastically reduce component orders, with some production expected to stop entirely by early 2026.
It is said that the presence of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max variants already cover the premium segment of Apple’s smartphone market. Hence, there’s simply no space for another premium iPhone above $1,000 (or Rs 1 lakh), leading to a poor demand for the Air.
While the iPhone Air raises eyebrows with its 5.6mm thin body, the lack of some features like a multi-camera setup and a smaller battery has pushed buyers towards the iPhone 17 Pro. For those seeking value, the lower-spec standard iPhone 17 is a much better bet than anything else on the market.
The presence of certain positive features, such as the A19 Pro chip with a 5-core GPU, a 120Hz ProMotion OLED display, a stronger Titanium frame, and Ceramic Shield 2 glass on both front and back, have failed to woo customers seeking more features.
Will there be no iPhone Air 2?
If history is anything to consider, the experimental models in the iPhone lineup seldom pull numbers. The insiders have hinted at Apple possibly ditching the Air from next year’s lineup in favour of the foldable iPhone, taking a cue from Samsung’s cancelled plans for the Galaxy S26 Edge.
