As part of a two-year investigation by 14 state attorneys general, the intenal communications reveal that TikTok executives are aware of the dangers their app poses to teenagers. The ongoing lawsuit accuses TikTok of intentionally designing its platform to be addictive, particularly for teenagers, thus violating state consumer protection laws. After Kentucky Public Radio inadvertently published excerpts of previously redacted material, approximately 30 pages of internal documents came to light, revealing TikTok’s awareness of the app’s negative impact on mental health.

The documents also highlight TikTok’s awareness of the harmful effects of beauty filters on young users. While there were discussions about providing educational resources related to body image disorders, significant actions to implement these suggestions were lacking. This reflects a troubling trend where the platform’s features are designed to boost engagement, even at the potential cost of its users’ mental health.

As the lawsuit unfolds, TikTok faces intensified scrutiny over its content moderation practices. Internal assessments reveal that harmful content, such as videos promoting self-harm and eating disorders, often slips through moderation efforts, allowing such material to proliferate on the platform.

In defending its child safety record, TikTok’s spokesperson criticised media reports for allegedly misrepresenting the company’s commitment. With the legal landscape rapidly evolving and public concern mounting, TikTok’s future is now intertwined with its ability to confront these serious allegations and implement meaningful safeguards to protect its predominantly teenage user base.
