Popular songs from great musicians have been taken down from YouTube. A number of songs from musicians such as Green Day, Adele, Bob Dylan, R.E.M and Nirvana have been taken down.  For example if you search for  ‘Wake me up when September ends,’ by Green Day, you will not be able to see the song. But what happened to these songs? Here’s what went wrong.

Your favorite songs vanishes

You will no longer be able to listen to Green day or even Hello by Adele. Possibly you can get  a message that reads like this  “ This video contains content from SESAC. It is not available in your country.” But why are these songs getting unavailable? According to YouTube these songs contain content from SESAC.  However, not all songs have been taken down, just a few from the mentioned artists.

So, what is SESAC and why is it impacting your YouTube songs content? SESAC can be defined as the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers. SESAC is an organization that has been around since 1930. According to its website, the platform currently licenses the public performance of more than 1.5 million songs. These represent about 15,000+ affiliated songwriters, composers, and music publishers.

However, YouTube has blamed SESAC for the mishap that took place. The company said that they failed in negotiations with SESAC. SESAC claimed that they own performing rights on more than 35,000 music artists and publishers. However, it seemed to be  a false statement. YouTube said that it takes copyright issues very seriously. So, as SESAC failed to maintain their copyright standards, they removed some of the songs.

But when will you get the songs back? As reported by The Verge, it’s a little hard to know when the songs will be back again. It’s not publicly announced, but The Verge has reached out to YouTube about the answers. “We have held good faith negotiations with SESAC to renew our existing deal. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to reach an equitable agreement before its expiration,” a spokesperson named Mariana de Felice explained further.
