Which subject best equips students for the future? Telegram CEO Pavel Durov believes the clear answer is mathematics. However, Elon Musk offers a different perspective. Durov recently posted on X (formerly Twitter), telling students, “If you’re a student choosing what to focus on, pick mathematics. It will teach you to rely on your own brain, think logically, break down problems, and solve them step by step in the right order. That’s the core skill you’ll need to build companies and manage projects.” His message quickly went viral, gaining over a million views and thousands of likes and reposts.
📚 If you’re a student choosing what to focus on, pick MATH. It will teach you to relentlessly rely on your own brain, think logically, break down problems, and solve them step by step in the right order. That’s the core skill you’ll need to build companies and manage projects.

However, not everyone saw it the same way. Elon Musk, the head of Tesla and SpaceX, offered a brief yet sharp response: “Physics (with math).”
Durov later agreed with Musk’s suggestion and added, “+1. If you’re already strong in math, it’s worth exploring physics and computer science – both are excellent ways to apply math in the real world, sharpen your logical and critical thinking, and solve important problems.”
As AI continues to advance, many are beginning to question whether it’s still worthwhile for students to learn subjects such as mathematics, physics, or computer science.
Pavel Durov, however, remains confident that the answer is yes. He argues that mathematics cultivates critical thinking skills essential for problem-solving, leadership, and innovation.
Musk, who has an academic background in both physics and economics, has consistently championed physics as a fundamental framework for making sense of the world and tackling difficult challenges. He has often credited this scientific approach to reasoning as the foundation for many of his boldest projects and innovations.
Joining the conversation, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently emphasized that certain human abilities will remain essential, regardless of technological advancements. He expressed confidence that artificial intelligence won’t fully replace software developers — even over the next century. “Coding isn’t merely about typing; it’s a process of deep thought and problem-solving,” Gates noted.
