The PlayStation 5 Pro is here. The PS5 Pro launch was a bit of a surprise, one can say, but then Sony has been dropping hints about it for some time, so we did know it was coming. But no one would have thought, it would come so soon. It is what you would expect—a pro-level PlayStation 5.
Not that the PS5 was—and is—any less powerful. But gamers always want more. The idea behind the PS5 Pro is simple. To give them what they want. In the launch video, PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny, asserted that with PS5 Pro, gamers won’t have to choose between fidelity or performance, rather they can have both something which wasn’t possible before with the PS5 due to graphical limitations.
The PS5 Pro is not a next-generation console—or leap—though. That should come with the PS6 and judging by how these things usually work, it should take some more time. In the meanwhile, what the PlayStation 5 Pro does, is bridge the gap for those seeking even more raw power out of what is already the world’s best-selling gaming platform.
If you’re wondering what all is different about it, we have you covered. Here are 5 things that make the PlayStation 5 Pro, THE PS5 PRO.
- DESIGN: The PS5 Pro has a “strikingly” new look, and we mean it. It has more stripes running across its mid-section than what the PS5 did. The PS5, when you look at it now, seems more muted in comparison. The look of the PS5 Pro in fact builds upon the PlayStation 5 Slim model. The one catch, if you call it that, is that Sony has removed the disc-drive. You will be able to buy it separately, like with the PS5 Slim.
- FASTER GPU, MORE STORAGE: The biggest upgrade is the graphics processing unit or GPU. It is faster with 67 percent more compute units than the PS5’s. Sony has also bumped up the memory by 28 percent. The result is a console that can render games 45 percent faster than what was possible on the PS5. Gamers can expect more detail (higher resolution) and improved frame rates in games. The PS5 Pro has 2TB of storage.
- RAY TRACING: The PlayStation 5 already did ray tracing well. The PS5 Pro does it better. The sheer graphical power of the console would allow developers to cast rays at double or triple the speed than on the PS5 leading to more realistic lighting and shadows in games. Your games are supposed to look more real on the PS5 Pro.
- AI UPSCALING: This might irk some purists, but the PS5 Pro also has AI upscaling. The console marks the debut of Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology which appears to be its take on Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR. As the name suggests, it will allow the console to add more detail and clarity to games on the fly using artificial intelligence.
- PRICE: Last but not the least, the PlayStation 5 Pro costs more than what the PS5 did at launch. In the US, it will sell at a price of USD 699.99 which roughly translates to about Rs 59,000. The PS5 Pro will be available globally from November 7, 2024. There is no word on India availability and pricing at the time of writing.
