Apple’s efforts to make Siri smarter with AI are running into technical challenges. The planned upgrade which was scheduled to roll out in April with iOS 18.4 has been delayed due to software glitches and engineering roadblocks, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.  Some features are expected to be pushed to iOS 18.5, around May or later.

Siri’s AI upgrade faces roadblocks

The new Siri is designed to be more intelligent, using personal data to provide better responses, controlling apps more precisely, and understanding on-screen context. However, internal testing has revealed that some of these features don’t yet work consistently.

Apple’s AI push under pressure

Apple aims to close the gaps with rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Meta with Apple Intelligence. However, reports suggest that Apple’s AI and machine-learning teams are struggling to meet deadlines with some engineers believing the technology was rushed due to investor pressure.

Impact on other Apple products

The delay on Siri upgrade will affect Apple’s other products including a new AI-powered smart home hub, expected to be announced later this year. Any delays in Siri’s ability to control apps and devices could also affect the launch of this product.

Apple, last month made some major executive changes to speed up its AI efforts. The company appointed Kim Vorrath to strengthen its Siri and Apple Intelligence efforts. Vorrath has been with Apple for over 30 years and will lead Vorrath will lead AI program management under Apple AI chief John Giannandrea. Apple is leaving no stone unturned to match up its rivals in the AI race and this change in executives suggests that AI is a top priority for the company at present.
