Generally speaking, handset makers tend to focus more on software than hardware these days. The reason is simple: software drives AI and machine learning algorithms which power features like advanced camera capabilities, voice assistants, and personalised recommendations. Also, software can be regularly updated with new features and improvements via app stores.
Samsung seems to be defying the industry trend, as seen in its latest Galaxy S25 series. The South Korean consumer electronics firm has added useful AI features and hardware upgrades in its Galaxy S25 Ultra phone. Our trial unit was the 12GB/256GB Titanium Silver Blue variant with a strong AI focus. Samsung says these AI features are more deeply integrated on both the hardware and software levels compared to last year’s phones. I reckon this is one of the best Android phones around with across-the-board improvements on the display, camera and battery front. A smooth and fast overall running remains the biggest selling point here.
To begin with, the S25 Ultra now has an even bigger 6.9-inch screen with a sleek and strong titanium frame, new Corning Gorilla Armor 2 on the front display and a built-in S-Pen. The handset looks modern in a bold design. It has a sturdy build, is scratch-resistant and anti-reflective, and can survive accidental drops on uneven surfaces. The phone’s smooth corners make it easy to hold.
Inside, we are looking at the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite – the most powerful processor ever in the Galaxy S series. This platform drives the AI capabilities on the device. It is also responsible for ultra-smooth gaming, smooth and fast running in day-to-day use. Also, it enhances power efficiency and battery life. The S25 Ultra offers three storage options that users can select from, which include 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities. It runs on One UI 7, Samsung’s AI-first platform that enables AI-powered personalised mobile experiences.
When it comes to the camera, the biggest attraction is the ultra wide sensor; it is now upgraded to 50MP from 12MP. It captures wide landscape shots and group photos with its 120-degree field of view enabled by an f/1.9 aperture. Otherwise, the phone has a 200MP main camera, a 50MP 5X telephoto camera and a 10MP 3X zoom camera like last year’s Ultra. Selfie lovers can utilise its 12MP front-facing camera with an f/2.2 aperture for capturing the 4K UHD videos at 30/60 fps. Its auto focus functionality enables users to capture sharp focused images in their self-portraits.
Needless to say, there’s a lot riding on AI on this Samsung flagship device. For example, a new tool called AI Select evaluates user screen activity to deliver suitable background images and GIFs. Circle to Search, a hugely popular AI feature, is also updated with the ability to recognise sound. This means that instead of just searching for what’s on screen, it’ll be able to recognise sounds such as songs from videos and social media posts. With Writing Assist, you can summarise content or automatically format notes. Drawing Assist helps bring ideas to life through combinations of sketches, text or image prompts. Ultimately, it’s for the users to discover the utility of AI features.
Final thoughts: The latest high-end smartphone from Samsung is incredibly powerful and efficient to handle day-to-day tasks. It impresses with its smooth and fast running.
