Sam Altman says GPT-6 will be a major upgrade, sharing lessons from GPT-5’s rocky launch

OpenAI launched ChatGPT-5 this year just a few months back in August. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman ChatGPT- 5 is the most advanced AI LLM model’s available today. He even went to say on ‘X’ that ChatGPT-5 is so advanced and usefull that he will never ever use any other AI models. However experts are users did not resonate with his feelings over ChatGPT-5, since many said that failed to impress and it was not the upgrade that Sam Altman claimed it would be.

However Sam Altman claims that the tides have turned and thus during an interview with the Wired. He said “The vibes were kind of bad at launch. But now they’re great,”. He insisted that ChatGPT-5 is an advancement in AI industry. He also said “There’s something important happening that did not happen with any pre-GPT-5 model, which is the beginning of AI helping accelerate the rate of discovering new science.”

Sam Altman has himself previously admitted that ChatGPT-5 was a disaster:

Sam Altman has himself previously admitted that ChatGPT-5 was a disaster. “I think we totally screwed up some things on the rollout,” he had said weeks after the launch. This statement highlights the challenges faced by OpenAI during the rollout of ChatGPT-5 like the company had to make adjustments or behavioural changes in the AI model so that the responses generated looked warmer and friendlier.

However many experts said that ChatGPT-5 failed to live up to it’s hype and failed to deliver Sam Altman claims. Since advancements in the AI LLM model they had been expecting looked incremental. Therefore Gary Marcus a New York university professor a leading critique of ChatGPt-5 said “GPT-5 was the most hyped AI system of all time. It was supposed to deliver two things, AGI and PhD-level cognition, and it didn’t deliver either of those.”

GPT-5’s modest gains show that OpenAI can no longer rely on simply scaling data:

He also said that GPT-5’s modest gains show that OpenAI can no longer rely on simply scaling data and chips to crack artificial general intelligence (AGI), a hypothetical level of intelligence that would enable an AI system to perform tasks on par or better than human beings.

In response to Marcus’ comments, OpenAI president Greg Brockman contended that GPT-5’s capabilities were not a result of bigger training datasets and more compute power. Instead, the Microsoft-backed AI startup used reinforcement learning based on human feedback (RLHF) as a technique to make improvements to the model.

Nonetheless Sam Altman replying to all the criticisms of ChatGPT-5 said “What I can tell you with confidence is GPT-6 will be significantly better than GPT-5, and GPT-7 will be significantly better than GPT-6. And we have a pretty good track record on these.”
