OnePlus founder Pete Lau, who is also the chief product officer of Oppo, has ignited excitement for the future of foldable phones, making a compelling case for their growing potential. This comes as Oppo gears up to launch its highly anticipated Find N5 foldable, expected to hit the market in February, though only in China. It is expected to be rebranded and sold under the name of OnePlus Open 2 outside of China, though online reports suggest, it may launch as is as well.

Lau has highlighted Oppo’s relentless pursuit of innovation in the foldable space through a recent post on X, the platform previously known as Twitter. He revealed that the upcoming Find N5 boasts an “unparalleled thinness” achieved through meticulous analysis of every detail and the integration of 20 new materials across 30 key components. Oppo has teased the key USP through photos comparing the Find N5 with general items like coins and pencils. For tech comparisons, the company has taken the new iPad Pro with M4 chip as an example, to show off how impossibly thin its next foldable is.

But the innovation doesn’t stop at aesthetics. Lau also emphasised the company’s focus on performance and functionality. By employing advanced PCB (Printed Circuit Board) engineering and a streamlined layout, Oppo has apparently managed to reduce the motherboard length by a remarkable 31.4 percent compared to its predecessor. This clever redesign has created more space for a “larger” battery, seemingly confirming that the Find N5 packs a capacity greater than 4,805 mAh.

The Find N5’s super slim design and big battery are expected to be key selling points, attracting consumers who have been hesitant to invest in foldable technology due to concerns about bulkiness and battery life. With these advancements, Oppo aims to challenge the perception of foldables as niche devices and position them as viable alternatives to traditional smartphones.

Lau’s tweet concludes with a thought-provoking question: “With the groundbreaking innovations we’ve made in design, is 2025 the year you get a foldable?”

Clearly, Oppo is coming in hard at Samsung. Whether or not, the Find N5 would be enough to make “buyers” sit up and take notice, that, only time will tell.
