All tech enthusiasts and gadgets lovers in India, get ready for a simple charging experience. We saw a similar common charger law passed by European Union and a similar universal charger is making its way to our country.

India is implementing a common charger law, aiming to standardise charging ports for electronic devices like smartphones and tablets. It will come into effect by mid of year 2025 which is a year later.

This means that by June 2025, all new devices including all smartphones and tablets sold in India will be required to have a USB-C type port for charging. According to a report by Mint, initially, the law will focus on smartphones and tablets. However, there are reports that laptops could be included by the end of 2026. Basic feature phones, hearables and wearables might be exempted for now.

This move aims to address several concerns. A single charging standard eliminates the need for multiple chargers for different devices, leading to significant reduction in e-waste. It also offers convenience for users. It simplifies the charging process and eliminates the frustration of misplaced or incompatible chargers.

In 2022, the Indian government introduced a new rule requiring all consumer electronics to use the same type of charging port. This decision came after talks with industry groups like MAIT, FICCI, and CII. As a result, USB Type-C was chosen as the standard charging port for smartphones, tablets, and notebooks in India.
