Nikon has launched the Z6 III, the world’s first camera to feature a 24.5-megapixel partially stacked CMOS sensor, in India. The higher-end Nikon Z9 and Z8 have fully stacked sensors so clearly, the Z6 III employs a unique design. Nikon doesn’t go into the specifics in the press release (or product pages) so we’ll have to wait for some hands-on time to get more clarity.
All we know is that the new sensor design allows for “up to 3.5x faster” performance over its predecessor, the Nikon Z6 II, which used a BSI CMOS sensor without any stacking. The Verge spent some time with the camera and explained—in its hands-on report—that here the circuit components are stacked as bars at the top and bottom of the pixel area instead of stretching across the entire sensor. The idea seems to be to eke out Z8/Z9 level performance from a relatively more affordable sensor. Obviously, these partially stacked sensors won’t be as fast, but performance gains (continuous shooting, autofocus, video frame rates, and rolling shutter) over the last generation are noticeable.
Moving on, the other big update in the Z6 III is its incredibly bright electronic viewfinder which can top—per Nikon—4,000 nits. It can record 6K RAW video at up to 60fps and 4K RAW at up to 120fps. Nikon claims a 20 percent improvement in autofocus speed over the Z6 II, with an extended range down to -10EV, enhancing low-light sensitivity. The Z6 III also boasts an impressive ISO range, up to 51,200 for videos and 64,000 for photos, making it ideal for capturing low-light scenes.
One of the standout features of the Z6 III is its in-camera Vibration Reduction (VR) system, achieving an 8.0-stop, one of the highest in the Nikon Z series. The camera also includes focus point VR, which reduces blurring in focused areas, making it easier to frame subjects around the peripheries.
Nikon apparently promises Z8-level build quality. The Z6 III has a body made of Sereebo P series carbon fibre and magnesium alloy. It is dust and moisture-sealed and can operate in temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius.
The Nikon Z6 III will be available by the end of June 2024 at a price of Rs 2,47,990 (body only) across Nikon outlets in India.
