Netflix has announced that it will discontinue support for select older generations of Apple TV, specifically the 2nd and 3rd generation models, starting July 31. This decision aims to “ensure you maintain the best possible Netflix viewing experience,” according to an email sent to subscribers this week.

The Apple TV (2nd generation), launched in 2010, supports 720p resolution, while the Apple TV (3rd generation), released in 2012, offers 1080p playback. Both models came before tvOS and the tvOS App Store was even a thing, and featured a limited set of pre-installed apps rather than the expansive app ecosystem available on newer devices. Both devices are now “obsolete”, as per Apple, meaning they are no longer eligible for hardware repairs.

The discontinuation means that users of these older Apple TV models will need to upgrade to a more recent version to continue using Netflix. Those with the Apple TV HD, introduced in 2015, or any newer model, including the Apple TV 4K, will not be affected by this change and can continue streaming Netflix as usual.

Netflix’s move reflects a broader industry trend of phasing out support for legacy hardware that cannot keep pace with the demands of modern streaming services. This ensures that subscribers can access the latest features, enhanced security, and the highest quality viewing experiences that newer devices offer.

For users still relying on the 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TV models, Netflix recommends upgrading to a current model to avoid any disruption in service. The latest Apple TV models provide not only access to Netflix but also a wide array of other streaming services and apps, all available through the tvOS App Store.

In other news, soon, the Windows app for Netflix will no longer support downloading TV shows and movies for offline playback. Netflix hasn’t specified any reason behind ending the support. However, users can still enjoy offline viewing on supported mobile devices, it has confirmed.
