Meta has announced that it will discontinue the cross-platform messaging feature that allowed users to chat with Facebook accounts on Instagram. Starting in mid-December, this integration will no longer be available, company announced in a blog post.
The feature was introduced in 2020, blurring the lines between two of Meta’s most popular social media platforms. It was later extended to group chats in 2021. The feature basically allowed users to seamlessly switch between Instagram and Facebook Messenger without needing separate apps for each platform.

Here’s what to expect after the change: Starting mid-December, users will no longer be able to initiate new chats or calls with Facebook friends directly from Instagram. The existing chats with Facebook accounts will become read-only, meaning users won’t be able to send new messages. Activity status and read receipts will no longer be visible for Facebook accounts. The existing chats will remain in the app but won’t migrate to the other platforms like Facebook or Messenger.
While removal of this feature may seem inconvenient, it’s important to remember that users still have other options for communicating with Facebook friends. They can continue using Facebook Messenger, send direct messages on Instagram, or switch to other communication platforms altogether.
