The Kerala High Court has issued a stern warning to its employees regarding the use of mobile phones during office hours, citing disruptions to work productivity. A memorandum released on December 2, 2024, noted that many staff members have been spending time on online gaming and browsing social media during work hours, leading to hindrances in the efficient running of office functions.
The court’s directive highlights that the use of mobile phones for personal activities, such as gaming or social media engagement, is strictly prohibited during office hours, except for lunch breaks. The court emphasized that mobile phones should only be used for official purposes during working hours, warning staff against using them for activities such as watching videos, online shopping, or trading, unless it pertains to their job duties. Any breach of these instructions would be viewed with utmost seriousness, the memorandum stressed.
“In this backdrop, all the members of the staff are informed that indulging in online games during office hours and lunch recess is strictly prohibited. Further, except for official purpose, use of mobile phones for officers and staff members for watching social media content, movie, online trading etc. during office hours other than lunch recess is strictly prohibited. Any violation of the same shall be viewed very seriously,” reads the memorandum.
To ensure adherence to the new rule, controlling officers have been instructed to closely monitor staff activities and prevent any violations. This move comes as part of the court’s ongoing efforts to maintain a professional atmosphere in its offices. The memorandum also referred to previous notices issued in 2009 and 2013, which had already prohibited such activities during work hours, though they made exceptions for senior officials with specific responsibilities.
