WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to share files with each other without needing an internet connection, similar to Apple’s AirDrop. This feature, called Nearby Share, has been in testing on the Android version of WhatsApp for a while, but it’s now coming to iPhone users as well.
Nearby Share will use an end-to-end encrypted connection to transfer files wirelessly. However, due to limitations in iOS, iPhone users will need to scan a QR code to initiate file sharing, as opposed to the Android version which can detect nearby devices automatically, according to a WABetaInfo report.
The good news is that Nearby Share is expected to work between iOS and Android devices, making it easier to transfer files between different phone platforms.
While the feature has been spotted in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS, it is currently only available for internal testing. There is no word yet on when Nearby Share will be available to the public.
In other news, WhatsApp is reportedly also developing a new feature that will allow users to create usernames for their profiles, significantly enhancing privacy. According to WABetaInfo, this upcoming feature will enable users to connect with others without the need to share their phone numbers.
This feature is said to be currently in development and has been spotted on the web client of WhatsApp. However, it is expected to be rolled out across other platforms in the near future. A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo reveals a ‘Pick your username’ toggle along with a tab where users can write their preferred username.
The setup process will allow users to select a unique username, when available, which will act as their distinct identity on the app. This initiative prioritises user privacy and simplifies the process of connecting with other WhatsApp users without sharing personal phone numbers. This feature will also benefit WhatsApp Business users, allowing them to create unique usernames based on their brand identities, separate from their phone numbers.
In addition to the username feature, WhatsApp recently announced the rollout of a ‘Favourites’ filter for chats and calls. This new filter allows users to store their frequently used contacts, facilitating quicker and easier connections with those individuals.
Stay tuned for more updates on the official release of WhatsApp’s username feature and other upcoming enhancements.
