The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has announced AI fellowships for the IndiaAI mission for B.Tech and M.tech students.
The Indian government has launched a significant initiative to enhance the nation’s AI capabilities through the IndiaAI Mission. This comprehensive programme is designed to foster innovation, support startups and build a strong AI infrastructure.
What is IndiaAI Mission?
This initiative plans to position India as a global leader in AI by leveraging public-private partnerships and promoting ethical AI development. Currently, the investment will start with an outlay of Rs 10,371.92 crore (approximately $1.24 billion).
According to an official blog from the MeitY, it is inviting nominees for the fellowship programme. The programme aims at providing support for improving the AI capabilities of India. Looking at the increased adoption of AI, it is expected that there is a dire need for awareness and education for the use of AI.
The IndiaAI Mission’s fellowships will be available for students enrolled in B.Tech or M.Tech programmes at the top 50 engineering universities, as ranked by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
Can IndiaAI Mission boost India’s AI capabilities?
Initially the IndiaAI Mission’s fellowships plans to expand the computational resources available for AI research and development. It is believed that the programme focuses on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Making AI in India and Making AI Work for India”. In addition to this it also focuses on other goals such as:
· Establish centres of excellence for AI innovation.
· Create and maintain comprehensive datasets to fuel AI research.
· Encourage the development of AI applications across various sectors.
· Focus on developing AI skills and education.
· Provide financial support to AI startups.
Furthermore, the fellowship programme also aims to create a safe environment for using AI on a larger scale on a daily basis.
How to apply for the fellowship programme?
So how can you apply for the fellowship programme? In order to apply, institutions must adhere to some guidelines when submitting nominations. These are:
· Nominations need to be endorsed by the professor overseeing the project/thesis and the head of the department, registrar, or head of the institution.
· You should submit the application for nominations in the prescribed format and within the specified deadline.
· Students are expected to publish research papers from their project work in leading academic journals.
· If a student fails to maintain the required minimum grade, subsequent disbursements of fellowship funds will be withheld.
