Can ChatGPT help you land a job? Maybe, if you come up with a nicely crafted prompt. However, can ChatGPT help you find a high-profile ‘good’ job? A techie from Bengaluru has recently given a greater example of how one can customise ChatGPT to their advantage and land a lucrative job.

In the case of this Bengaluru techie, he landed a job with PayPal – a role that’s lucrative by today’s standards.

Amar Saurabh, who holds a Master’s degree in Product Management from Carnegie Mellon University and an engineering degree in Bengaluru, has previously worked for Meta and TikTok. However, he sought a new role at a more established, stable company in the US. Similar to most other candidates, his initial search was slow. He was able to nab only two or three interviews over the first couple of months.

Techie falls back to a customised ChatGPT

Soon after, Saurabh quickly realised the limitations of using generic AI tools. He found that the standard ChatGPT tier often provided mixed results, confusing responses and constantly prompting him to re-upload his resume — a problem that stems from using the chatbot for diverse tasks, ranging from recipe ideas to travel plans. ChatGPT couldn’t remember his resume.

To solve this, Saurabh created a bespoke version of GPT, which he named “PM job search advisor.” This dedicated AI assistant was prepared with his whole professional profile, including his resume, LinkedIn profile, and detailed project notes. The custom version was all tailored specifically for senior-level product management roles. Saurabh estimates that it took him under two hours to fully set up the specialised GPT tool, which he accessed via a paid ChatGPT plan for greater usage capacity.

The Custom GPT acted as a hyper-efficient personal recruitment agent, improving his application success rate. Saurabh detailed several key tactics:

1. Targeted outreach: The GPT crafted highly personalised LinkedIn connection requests and helped identify the correct recruiters and their email addresses at target companies.

2.  Resume optimisation: For every application, the AI refined and customised his resume to ensure perfect keyword optimisation and aligned with the specific job description. This helped him save countless hours of manual editing.

3. Interview preparation: By inputting the job description and interview date, the GPT helped him prepare by highlighting the most relevant experiences from his career and anticipating potential questions. Saurabh noted that this feature alone “saved me hours” of struggling to recall career accomplishments.

The outcome? A job with PayPal

While the number of applications remained constant, the quality and personalisation led to a sharp spike in responses. In just two months after deploying the Custom GPT, Saurabh secured at least seven interviews from major firms, including Reddit and Intuit, eventually landing the position of Lead Product Manager at PayPal.

But Saurabh doesn’t want to stop there. He plans to further evolve his AI advisor with agentic capabilities, allowing it to autonomously apply to jobs and answer initial application questions.
