At WWDC 2024 on June 10, Apple is widely expected to announce a bunch of AI—generative AI—features coming to its devices, possibly this fall. The suit will reportedly be called “Apple Intelligence.” Think of it as a one-stop-shop for all things AI on Apple devices. While everyone is waiting to see what Apple has in store, already there are reports coming in, that Apple Intelligence may not work with all Apple devices. Just a select few.

Apple WWDC 2024 updates: Apple Intelligence to be the star of the show

According to Bloomberg, Apple is set to unveil its comprehensive AI system, dubbed “Apple Intelligence,” at WWDC 2024 on June 10. The new setup will introduce beta AI features across Apple’s platforms and apps, including a ChatGPT-like chatbot powered by OpenAI. The latter will be possible due to a “billion dollar” partnership between Apple and OpenAI.

Unlike many competitors focusing on providing flashy features, Apple’s AI approach prioritises practicality, initially focusing on AI-powered summaries and reply suggestions.

Reportedly, Apple will use some type of algorithm to determine whether tasks should be processed locally or on cloud servers, utilising its M2 chip in data centres to ensure secure remote data processing with a Secure Enclave. To address privacy concerns, Apple plans to avoid creating user profiles and roll out reports confirming that user data remains secure and isn’t sold or accessed.

Notably, Apple will not make the new AI features mandatory; users can choose to opt in. Also, it plans to keep them in beta even after formal launch which is expected to be sometime in September.

Apple WWDC 2024 updates: But, what’s the catch?

In typical Apple fashion, not everyone will be able to use its intelligent AI features. According to Bloomberg, Apple Intelligence will require an iPad and Mac with the M1 chip or later. For iPhone users, it will require an iPhone 15 Pro/iPhone 15 Pro Max at least. The upcoming iPhone 16 series is a usual suspect, though it will be interesting to see if Apple keeps its AI features a pro-iPhone exclusive.
