At WWDC 2024, after Tim Cook announced Apple’s partnership with OpenAI, the details about the deal remained unclear. News comes in that Apple plans to establish revenue-sharing agreements with OpenAI.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman explained that the deal would mean that Apple would receive a share of the revenue generated by OpenAI, who would monetise their services on Apple platforms.
What’s the deal!
As per the deal, ChatGPT, a chatbot that responds in plain terms to information requests, will be added into Apple’s Siri and new writing tools. Gurman explains that Apple will not be paying OpenAI as part of the partnership.
Instead, Apple plans to push OpenAI’s brand and technology to hundreds of millions of devices of equal or greater value than monetary payments, as reported by Bloomberg.
Reportedly the addition of ChatGPT into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia will be free but optional. In case you subscribe to ChatGPT Plus, you will be able to access additional features by logging into their accounts.
The collaboration ahead!
It looks like this deal can set the stage for potential revenue-sharing models down the line. This can also promote a mutually beneficial relationship, shaping the future of AI integration in consumer technology.
As of now OpenAI’s standalone ChatGPT app for iOS will allow you to pay for ChatGPT Plus through Apple’s In-App Purchase system. Bloomberg explains that this deal can help Apple get a 15-30 per cent share of those subscriptions.
“The partnership is not expected to bring in significant revenue for either company, at least in the beginning. Instead, neither Apple nor OpenAI will exchange any money for the integration. The true value lies in the exposure and integration of ChatGPT into Apple’s vast ecosystem,” Mark Gurman, a well-known tech journalist at Bloomberg, concluded.
