If you are using an Apple iPhone on a daily basis, this needs your attention. Apple has identified a bunch of security issues with its latest iOS 18 patch. The iOS 18.5 update patch, which was released a few days ago, brings together a bunch of crucial security patches for all iPhones running iOS 18. Although security patch releases are quite common, this one addresses some key bugs and loopholes that give scamsters backdoor access to system files, thus leading to cybercrime.
The iOS 18.5 update patch takes care of several security vulnerabilities that plague all new and older iPhones running on iOS 18, including the latest models like iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16e.
The most crucial bug fix revolves around AppleJPEG, which allowed scamsters to share malicious media files that “may lead to unexpected app termination or corrupt process memory”, says Apple. The issue has been addressed with improved input sanitisation and is applicable on iPhone XS and newer models, iPad Pro 3rd Gen and newer models and a couple of additional models.
iPhone 16e critical network risk addressed
Other than the AppleJPEG bug, Apple also acknowledged another bug pertaining to the newest iPhone in the model range – the iPhone 16e. Apple states that “An attacker in a privileged network position may be able to intercept network traffic” and clarifies that the “issue was addressed through improved state management.”
It should be noted that the iPhone 16e features Apple’s first homegrown 5G modem, a component that is expected to be a standard feature on the upcoming iPhone 17 series expected to launch in September 2025.

How to download and install iOS 18.5
The iOS 18.5 update patch is available to all iPhones running on iOS 18. Head over to the Settings app and tap on the search bar to look for Software Update. Now check for the update patch to show up and tap on the download button. Ensure that your iPhone is connected to a reliable Wi-Fi service.
