Apple has announced significant updates for iOS and iPadOS users in the European Union to comply with the Digital Markets Act. Available later this year, these changes will give EU users greater control over their devices with new features for default apps, browser choices, and app deletions.
New default apps section
One of the key updates includes the introduction of a “Default Apps” section in Settings for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. This new section will allow users to set their preferred default apps for various functions including phone calls, messaging, text translation, navigation, password management, keyboards, and call spam filtering. This enhancement aims to offer users more flexibility and personalisation in managing their devices.
Enhanced browser choice screen
Apple is also updating the browser choice screen for EU users. When Safari is set as the default browser, users will see a more detailed choice screen showcasing additional information about alternative browsers. Developers of these browsers will gain access to more data regarding the performance of the choice screen, helping them understand user interactions better.
Expanded app deletion options
In response to user feedback and regulatory requirements, Apple will now allow EU users to delete several built-in apps. The App Store, Messages, Photos, Camera, and Safari can now be removed from the device, providing users with more control over their app inventory. However, core apps like Settings and Phone will remain undeletable.
Apple is bringing these changes in compliance with the Digital Markets Act and enhancing user autonomy in the EU.
