Pixxel, a pioneer in hyperspectral imaging, has achieved a major milestone by being selected for NASA’s $476 million Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition Program. This contract, set to run until November 2028, places Pixxel in an elite group of global Earth observation companies.

Through this agreement, Pixxel will supply NASA, along with its government and academic partners, with advanced hyperspectral Earth observation data. The company’s technology is capable of capturing detailed insights across hundreds of narrow wavelengths, offering unprecedented clarity on critical environmental factors such as climate change, agriculture, and resource management. This high-resolution data will aid NASA’s Earth science initiatives and foster improved understanding of environmental patterns and challenges.

Pixxel’s CEO and co-founder, Awais Ahmed stated that the contract underscores the growing importance of hyperspectral imaging in space-based Earth observatory. “We are proud to support NASA’s Earth Observation programs and to demonstrate the impact our technology can have in monitoring and addressing global environmental challenges.”

Pixxel is also gearing up for the launch of its next-generation hyperspectral satellites, called Fireflies. These satellites, with an impressive 5-meter resolution, will offer the highest resolution for hyperspectral imagery in orbit, capturing data across 250 spectral bands. With a 40 km swath width and the ability to revisit any point on the globe every 24 hours, Fireflies will provide comprehensive coverage crucial for ongoing environmental monitoring efforts.

As part of its ambitious plans, Pixxel aims to expand its constellation to 24 satellites, ensuring real-time access to critical data for industries and governments. This expanded network will deliver actionable insights, enhancing natural resource management and environmental resilience.
