Nobel Prize Latest News: The Royal Swedish Academy of Science on Wednesday announced the 2023 Nobel for Chemistry. This year, the Nobel Prize has been awarded to Moungi G Bawendi, Louis E Brus and Alexei I Ekimov. The trio has won the prestigious prize for “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots,” the Nobel Prize officials said on X.
This year, the award season began with prize awarded to the scientists for the pathbreaking research that led to the Covid-19 vaccine. According to the official statement, the scientists that won the Nobel today are pioneers in the exploration of the nanoworld. Nowadays, quantum dots are an important part of nanotechnology’s toolbox. While Bawendi is a scholar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brus is working at Columbia University. Ekimov has been associated with New York’s Nanocrystals Technology Inc.
Three scientists had shared last year’s Nobel as well. John F Clauser, Anton Zeilinger and Alain Aspect were awarded the Nobel prize in 2022 for their stellar work in quantum information science.
Earlier this week, three prominent scientists, Ferenc Krausz, Pierre Agostini and Anne L’Huillier were awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in the field of Physics.
During the early 1980s, Alexei Ekimov achieved a breakthrough by inducing size-dependent quantum effects in colored glass. The glass’s hue was attributed to copper chloride nanoparticles, and Ekimov illustrated how the particle size influenced the glass color through quantum phenomena.
Shortly thereafter, Louis Brus became the world’s pioneer in demonstrating size-dependent quantum effects in particles suspended in a fluid.
In 1993, Moungi Bawendi brought about a revolutionary advancement in the chemical production of quantum dots, leading to the creation of nearly flawless particles. This exceptional quality was essential for their practical applications.
The above mentioned timeline of the research and discovery done by Alexei Ekimov, Louis Brus and Moungi Bawendi was mentioned in the press release that announced the Nobel Prize Chemistry.
