National Science Day was first observed in 1987 after the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) recommended celebrating February 28 to recognise Dr Raman’s scientific contribution. The proposed idea was approved by the Government of India and since then it has been celebrated every year.
The significance of the day is to grow scientific awareness among the public, inspire young minds to take up careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). This day also acknowledges contributions of Indian scientists to global research.
Who was Dr. C.V. Raman?
Dr. Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (CV Raman) was one of India’s most famous physicists. His findings of the Raman Effect in 1928 earned him the coveted Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. With this award he also became the first Asian to receive his honour in science. The Raman effect demonstrates how light scatters when it passes through a transparent medium. This discovery also laid the foundation of spectroscopy which is widely used in the field of physics, medicine and chemistry.
