Dhanteras 2025: Diwali, the festival of lights, is almost here. One of the biggest Hindu festivals, the celebrations span for five days, starting with Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi – an auspicious day to buy gold, silver and other items that symbolise wealth and prosperity. Before the Diwali Puja, Narak Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali (October 20) is celebrated, while Govardhan Puja (October 22) and Bhai Dooj (October 23) extend the celebrations by bringing more festive joy. However, this year Narak Chaturdashi is coinciding with the main Diwali celebration on October 20.
Diwali falls in October or November according to Gregorian calendar. As per Hindu calendar, it is celebrated in the month of 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashvin or Kartika. On this day, it’s customary to worship Lord Kubera, the God of wealth, and goddess Lakshmi. This year Dhanteras will be celebrated on October 18, while Diwali falls on October 20. However, many cities will celebrate Diwali on October 21. Click here to check the correct timings.
Why Dhanteras is celebrated
The story of Dhanteras as per religious texts dates back to Satyug era when Devas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons) churned the Ksheer Sagar to obtain Amrit or the nectar of immortality. Lasting for several days, many things and entities emerged from it including Kamadhenu cow that granted wishes, the divine elephant Airavata, Kalpavriksha that fulfilled wishes, Lord of wealth Kubera, and the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. It is said that Shiva had to consume the deadly poison Halahala to save the universe after it emerged from the Samudra manthan.
To commemorate this important day, Dhantrayodashi or Dhanteras is celebrated every year. On this day, people pray to Lord Kubera and goddess Lakshmi to bless their families with success, wealth, and prosperity.
On Dhanteras, people buy Gold, Silver and other valuable items as a symbol of wealth and prosperity. However, it’s advised to make these purchases according to the auspicious time or shubh muhurat, which may differ from city to city. Check out the timings.
