In a bold move, a Pune-based tech professional decided to resign from his post at Infosys without securing another job, citing systemic workplace challenges. Despite being the sole breadwinner for their family, the techie decided to give preference to mental health and self-respect over job security. Bhupendra Vishwakarma’s LinkedIn post highlighted deeper issues faced by employees in a corporate setup.

Lack of financial growth despite promotion

The techie who worked as a System Engineer before being promoted to Senior System Engineer disclosed that the promotion he was awarded didn’t come along with a hike in salary. For three years, their consistent efforts and contributions were overlooked financially, resulting in frustration and a sense of stagnation.

Things worsened when the team cut down the workforce from 50 to 30. Instead of hiring the replacements, the management redistributed the workload among the remaining employees. Thus, additional responsibilities were allotted without any increase in pay and no acknowledgment was given for the same.

Adding to the strain was a toxic client environment in which unrealistic demands were expected and if not done then issues were escalated even on minor issues. The situation created a high-stress workplace where employees were feeling burnt and no regard was given for personal well-being.

The techie also alleged that onsite opportunities were not assigned based on merit but were driven by regional and linguistic preferences. He claimed that employees who were fluent in languages like Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam had an upper hand over Hindi-speaking colleagues, a practice that was termed as unfair and discouraging.

Eventually, the techie made up his mind and took the difficult decision to quit without having any other job offer. He realized that staying back would compromise his dignity as well as affect his mental health.

He stated, ‘’I couldn’t continue to live in an environment where hard work has been taken for granted, and systemic issues were disregarded. Employees deserve better than this.’’

This case underlined how some corporate workplaces manage the workforce and treat their employees. This post also raised the debate about the work culture and meeting clients’ expectations.

As the former Infosys employee pointed out, ‘’Employees are not just resources to exploit-they are individuals with aspirations and limits. Ignoring these issues risks not only losing talent but also the credibility of the organisation.’’
