Known for his effort to adapt cultures, PM Modi has always respected the regional culture of the places he visits. Via fashion or language, the Indian Prime Minister has always attempted to blend with his audience and give them something to relate to.
PM Modi’s arrival in Manipur today was preceded by his visit to Aizawl, Mizoram. He flagged off several infrastructural projects, including three major railway routes connecting the state to other parts of the country. PM Modi adorned the traditional Mizo attire as he was honoured with the traditional Thangchhuah costume, and conferred with the symbolic horn of the Mithun, a semi-domesticated bovine reared in Mizoram households.

Decoding PM Modi’s Mizo attire
Traditional headgear – Vakiria
The traditional headgear adorned with beads and feathers symbolised honour, achievement, and valour. Made in different colours, the black Vakiria worn by the Indian Prime Minister in Mizoram symbolised strength and endurance. For respected personalities, this headgear also symbolised bravery and social accomplishment. The patterns signify beauty and harmony with nature.
Mizo Shawl – Thangchhuah
Reserved for individuals with a high social rank, this costume is presented to those with an elevated spiritual status and often symbolises honour and societal rank. In general, the men’s attire is more robust and functional, symbolising their role as protectors and providers.
Mithun Horn
PM Modi was also presented with the traditional Mizo horn, usually hand-crafted from the horn of the Mithun cattle animal. Holding great socio-economic value, Mithun is the culture’s pride, and the horn is traditionally used in ceremonial functions, festivities, and rituals.
PM Modi in Manipur
PM Modi was welcomed by the young children of Churachandpur, Manipur. He interacted with locals and young minds as he was gifted a portrait of himself. Welcomed with a bouquet, he was presented with the traditional headgear called Kokyet, adorned with hornbill feathers and other symbolic ornaments. This handmade hat represents honour and has great spiritual significance in Manipuri traditions.
Overall, PM Modi was seen in his signature khadi kurta and Modi jacket. Seen embracing the culture, he is set to visit Manipur for the first time since the violence erupted 27 months ago. Speaking on the newest GST reform, he praised the robust adaptability of the state and announced that “Aizawl is now on the railway map of India,” in his address.
