Early Life and Career
Alakh Pandey was born on October 2, 1991, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India. He initially pursued mechanical engineering at Harcourt Butler Technical University but left the program during his second year.
Despite facing financial challenges in his family, Pandey carved out a path to success by offering private tutoring. He began teaching younger students in sixth grade, which ignited his passion for education. In 2016, he launched his YouTube channel, Physics Wallah, and further expanded his reach by creating the Physics Wallah app in 2020.
In June 2022, Physics Wallah achieved unicorn status after raising $101 million in its Series A funding round, backed by Westbridge and GSV Ventures. In February 2024, Pandey met with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to discuss initiatives aimed at enhancing the state’s education system and establishing coaching centers.

Alakh Pandey is happily married to his wife, Shivani Dubey, and their love story feels like something out of a movie. They first met through a mutual friend at Alakh’s friend’s office, with Shivani unaware that he was the co-founder and CEO of Physics Wallah.
As the day went on, Shivani reached out to Alakh to learn more about him. That’s when he revealed his identity and his role with Physics Wallah. Later, while Alakh was busy designing T-shirts for his students, Shivani stepped in to help him, and in that moment, he realized he had found his soulmate. Shivani is a freelance journalist and holds an MSc in Chemistry.

Like many students in India, Pandey aspired to excel in engineering and aimed for IIT. However, despite his hard work, he did not achieve the required score in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Instead, he enrolled at Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTI). After a brief stint, he made the bold decision to drop out, opting not to pursue a BTech degree.
Faced with the reality of his situation, Pandey decided to carve out a niche for himself as an alternative educator. He recognized the need for a different approach to learning, one that would resonate with students outside the traditional classroom setting. With a deep passion for physics, he launched a YouTube channel aimed at making complex concepts accessible and engaging.

Starting from humble beginnings, Pandey’s channel gained traction. His initial earnings were modest—only around Rs 5,000 from tuition fees. However, through dedication and innovative teaching methods, his platform exploded in popularity, eventually transforming into Physics Wallah, an ed-tech company that is now valued at over Rs 9,100 crore (approximately $1.1 billion).
A Unique Business Model
What sets Physics Wallah apart from other ed-tech firms is its profitable business model. Unlike many startups that burn cash to scale, Pandey’s company has been profitable since its inception. In recent years, Physics Wallah reported impressive profits: Rs 9.4 crore in 2021, Rs 133.7 crore in 2022, and Rs 108 crore in 2023.

Operating from Noida, Physics Wallah boasts a strong online presence, with 61 channels that collectively attract over 31 million subscribers.
