Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has featured in over 350 films, including the blockbuster L2: Empuraan. Released earlier this year, it found itself in the middle of several controversies as he made headlines with Prithviraj Sukumaran over a language row. However, Mohanlal’s timeless performances have kept him ever-relevant and an icon in the film fraternity.
Married to Suchitra Mohanlal, he has two children, Pranav and Vismaya. Pranav, who appeared in the hit horror film Dies Irae, prefers to stay away from the spotlight. Mohanlal, however, has welcomed several people into his Ooty home. Opened early this year for the public, those interested can reportedly book the property for a little above Rs 37,000 a night. Here’s a peek inside Mohanlal’s Ooty villa.
Hideaway villa: Mohanlal’s Ooty property
Called the ‘Hideaway Villa,’ Mohanlal’s bungalow is located at the heart of Ooty in Lovedale. Built with a colonial-style architecture, it exudes luxury and now serves as an opulent retreat for tourists. Earlier, it served as the Mohanlal family residence for over a decade.
The villa opens to an airy living room decorated in an English aesthetic, it flaunts contrasting colours and textures. Built for antique-style living, the living room has its own fireplace, giving the hill-station home a woody aroma. But the fireplace isn’t the only eye-catching element; commonly called the ‘Family Room’, it houses over 300 artworks dedicated to Mohanlal’s legacy in the film industry. Everything from caricatures to memorabilia is an ode to his presence in Malayalam cinema.
The Ooty ‘Hideaway’ has three bedrooms, each of them done up to perfection. A mirror-themed decor in Mohanlal’s daughter, Vismaya’s, room stands out. Inspired by nature, it overlooks the lush scenery that surrounds the house and what covers it. An entire boundary wall is covered in foliage, adding a hillside charm to the home. The master bedroom, Mohanlal’s own, features soft greys and garden access.
The Gun House
Yes, it is what it sounds like; however, it cannot be spotted at first glance. Tucked away in a hidden annexe, the Gun House doubles as a bar and a showroom. Displaying several guns Mohanlal used in his films like ‘Marakkar’ and ‘Barroz’, a note to the reader – they’re fake! These replica guns are one of the most ravishing features of the house, which not only gives you insider access into personal anecdotes, but also live where Mohanlal’s legacy will live on.
The entire experience is tied together with the perfect garnish of authentic Kerala meals served fresh to the guests. Prepared by the family’s long-time house chef, you can never go wrong with a Kerala meal to fill your tummy. A symbol of legacy and passion, Mohanlal’s Ooty home is an ode to Malayalam cinema and the rich cultural background it carries.
