Holi 2025: As Holi 2025 approaches, everyone is gearing up to indulge in festive delicacies like gujiyas and kachoris. However, amid all the celebration and joy, overindulgence is also possible.
Overindulgence in sweet dishes is not recommended for anyone and people with diabetes should be extremely mindful. It is noteworthy that diabetes continues to be a major non-communicable disease (NCD) in India.
People with diabetes should be extremely careful about food habits especially in the festive seasons to ensure their blood-glucose levels are in check.
What you should eat?
- Try mocktails made with fresh water, fruit juices, lemon, mint, and a pinch of black salt.
- Opt for sweets made up of natural sweeteners like jaggery over sugar or other artificial sweeteners. You can also add dates, raisins, figs (anjeer) or fruits to sweeten your desert.
- Eat protein rich food items with each meal such as dal, paneer, curds or buttermilk and salads which helps to reduce sugar craving.
- Steamed sprouts, idli, dosa, and cheelas are also good options as they are easy to digest.
- Keep yourself hydrated with water or switch to natural beverages like coconut water, lemonade or milk for refreshment.
What to avoid?
- Avoid alcohol consumption as it can lead to hypoglycemia.
- Avoid junk and fried foods.
- Avoid foods high in sugar and carbohydrates, as these can spike blood sugar levels.
Portion control is extremely important for managing your sugar intake and consider limiting your intake within your daily required calories.
