Popular actor Kavita Chaudhary known for her role in ‘Udaan’ has passed away due to cardiac arrest at Parvati Devi Hospital in Amritsar. The 67-year-old actor gained fame after her role as an IPS officer in the TV series ‘Udaan’ in 1989 and her role as Lalita-ji in iconic Surf advertisements of the ’90s.
Her nephew Ajay Sayal said she died in the hospital at 8:30 PM on Thursday at the Amritsar hospital. She was admitted to the hospital a few days ago due to low blood pressure and her condition became critical later, he added.
Kavita gained fame through numerous television appearances on Doordarshan during the 1980s and 1990s. Her notable roles include performances in shows such as “Your Honour,” “Apradhi Kaun!,” and “IPS Diaries.”
Kavita Chaudhary is survived by her daughter Sayal and her niece.
Chaudhary became widely known for her portrayal of IPS officer Kalyani Singh in “Udaan,” a pioneering television series on women’s empowerment that aired on Doordarshan from 1989 to 1991. Not only did she act in the series, but she also wrote and directed it, drawing inspiration from the life of her elder sister and police officer, Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya.
“Udaan,” featuring Shekhar Kapur alongside Chaudhary, depicted the challenges faced by a woman aspiring to become an IPS officer. The critically acclaimed show, recognized for motivating a generation of women to pursue careers in public service, was re-aired on Doordarshan during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Actor Amit Behl was among those who expressed condolences following Chaudhary’s passing.
