The L2: Empuraan Box Office Collection has made promising progress across its first three days collecting over Rs 45 crore among domestic audiences and becoming the fastest Malayali film to gross Rs 100 crore worldwide. As the film enters its first Sunday over the Eid long weekend 2025, the film has crossed Rs 5.5 crore in half a day, Sacnilk reports.
While Kerala still dominates with its audience share, there is a 15% expected change between day three and four. The political thriller has had the fastest opening for Mollywood across the US and UK becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2025. Despite of finding itself in the middle of a controversy netizens actively gave their opinion on social media comparing Empuraan to the reactions elicited ahead of the release of “The Kerala Story.”
Senior leaders from Congress like KC Venugopal expressed his idea on the freedom of creative expression in cinema just after the release of L2: Empuraan saying that it is a film that “exposes Sangh Parivar agendas.” However, BJP State President Rajeev Chandrasekhar supported the film taking a stand that BJP is not against any film, condemning the call for a ban.
Following this duality, Prithiviraj Sukumaran and other makers have decided to make seventeen “voluntary modifications” which were previously certified by the Censor Board. Producer Gokulam Gopalan also made a statement as per Manoram Online saying that he told, “Prithviraj Sukumaran to make necessary changes if any dialogue or scene in the film hurt anyone. Certain words have already been muted. There is a protest against certain things in the film. I have asked the director to make necessary changes. We are not involved in any politics.” Speaking of the cost required to make these changes, he mentioned that nearly Rs 40 lakh would be required in order to incorporate the modifications along with managing the 4000 cinemas running the film.
The new version of L2: Empuraan is expected to release next week with 17 new cuts in four languages, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi across India and worldwide. The new version will tone down certain angles of violence against women and portrayal of other events. Crossing the Rs 50 crore mark in three days shows promising performance from Empuraan ahead of its OTT release reportedly on JioHotstar.
