Jaswinder Bhalla, famous Punjabi comedian and actor, passed away at the age of 65 on Friday, August 22, in Mohali. He was undergoing treatment at Fortis Hospital for a brief period of illness for the past few days. He suffered a brain stroke, as per a BBC Hindi report that quoted Bhalla’s friend Bal Mukund Sharma.
The popular comedian is known for his roles in films such as ‘Carry on Jatta’, ‘Mahaul Theke Hai’, ‘Jatt Airways’ and ‘Jatt and Juliet 2’, among other performances. He had given the industry over three decades of social satire and cultural commentary. As per reports, the last rites will be conducted tomorrow, on Saturday, at the Balongi Cremation Ground in Mohali.
Who is Jaswinder Bhalla?
His unique style of comedy has touched many. Born in 1960, Jaswinder Bhalla was a professor by profession but he soon entered the world of comedy through ‘Chhankata 88’. After its great success, there was no looking back, He swiftly made his entry in films with ‘Dulla Bhatti’ and gave several blockbusters to the Punjabi film industry.
Apart from being an actor and comedian, he held a Ph.D in Agriculture, as per reports.

President of Punjab Congress, Amarinder Singh Raja took to X (formerly Twitter) and condoled the loss of Jaswinder Bhalla. He wrote, “A proud Punjabi voice around the world , his contribution and love for the community will always be remembered.”

MP Swati Maliwal also extended her condolences on social media and wrote, “A true icon who used humour not just to entertain but to deliver powerful social messages,” describing Jaswinder Bhalla.
“A legendary actor, comedian & academician, who filled Punjabi hearts with laughter for decades,” read a post on X (formerly Twitter), honouring Bhalla’s contribution in the industry. Social media has been flooded with several clips reminiscing his performances. “His ‘chankata’ will echo forever,” wrote a user.
