After making quite the splash with its debut earlier this May, Netflix’s Indian drama The Royals has been officially renewed for a second season. The announcement comes just weeks after the show premiered on May 9, and fans of the palace intrigue-meets-rom-com series have plenty to celebrate.

Starring Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar as the central couple, Netflix India confirmed the renewal via Instagram, with the caption, “Old money, new blood and a new season is in the works. The Royals Season 2 is coming soon, only on Netflix.”

While a release date is yet to be confirmed, industry buzz suggests the second installment could arrive sometime in mid to late 2026.

What to expect from The Royals Season 2?

Details around Season 2 are being kept tightly under wraps, but showrunner Rangita Pritish Nandy offered a glimpse into what fans can look forward to. “Season 1 of The Royals was our love letter to the romcom genre; palaces, polo races, midnight masqued balls, fort-top romps and raves—love at its most chaotic and charming. That struck a chord and trended globally,” she said. “This told us just one thing: we had to come back for more. We are thrilled to team up with Netflix for a second season that’s going to be bigger, bolder, and even more fabulous. Expect more fire, more feisty banter, and yes, a whole lot of drama. Because in our world, the crowns may be metaphorical—but the chaos is royally real.”

What happened in The Royals season 1?

Set against the backdrop of the fictional royal family of Morpur, Season 1 followed the household’s struggle to stay afloat after the sudden death of the king leaves them in financial ruin. Enter Bhumi Pednekar’s character, Sophia Shekhar, an ambitious hospitality mogul with a bold plan to transform the family palace into a luxury bed and breakfast.

Her unlikely alliance with Ishaan Khatter’s Aviraaj “Fizzy” Singh, the hesitant heir to the throne, served as the romantic core of the series.

However, the season finale delivered a bombshell – Aviraaj is revealed to be the illegitimate son of Maharani Padmaja, played by Sakshi Tanwar. The revelation shatters both his personal identity and his relationship with Sophia. The final scene, set during a press conference intended to celebrate the success of their business venture, sees Aviraaj walking away from Sophia in stunned silence, leaving their future hanging in the balance.
