The Rahul Ravindran directorial is a fairy tale love story, but it takes a dark turn. Starring opposite Mandanna, Dheekshith Shetty has been praised for his intense role. The Girlfriend Collection Day 1: Box Office update
Based on early estimates of industry tracker Sacnilk, The Girlfriend has grossed Rs 1.3 crore on its opening day. A meagre start to a thrilling plot, fans are yet to shower the weekend love over the movie. The Girlfriend in Telugu had an overall occupancy rate of 16.9% and attracted 23.55% in night shows. With more than 600 shows in India, it was most popular in Hyderabad with a 26% occupancy rate. However, Bengaluru disappointed The Girlfriend makers with 9% seats filled from 278 screenings.
The Girlfriend in Hindi showed single-digit occupancies and barely had 50 shows nationally. It also stars Anu Emmanuel, Rao Ramesh, and Rohini in key roles.
Rashmika fans stunned by low performance
Social media sleuths are stunned by this low opener after Thamma’s Rs 24 crore opening day. With theories that accuse PR strategies and social media presence, fans remained stunned that the film didn’t perform on its opening Friday. They were also doubtful of the conventional Telugu films, which worship their heroes, since Rashmika Mandanna’s The Girlfriend showed them in a bad light.
Social media reviews rated it as a ‘good movie.’ A netizen wrote, “The movie was also good but a bit dragged…I loved Rashmika’s acting in this one after Geetha Govindam, Dear Comrade & Animal confrontation scene.” Others even felt that the film was overshadowed by Mandanna’s engagement announcement with south superstar Vijay Devarakonda.
