The latest instalment in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, Thamma starring Ayushman Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna is set for a Diwali release on Tuesday October 21. The ‘horror’ romantic comedy has stirred public interest as advanced bookings for it have opened on a positive note, signalling that the movie could actually do great at the Box Office.

As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the movie had already pre-sold 6,000 tickets within hours of opening across leading Indian chains like PVR and INOX, while overall ticket sales throughout the country crossed 12,000 for the first day. Sacnilk also reported that the Industry is ‘hopeful’ about a big opening for the movie despite the festive season; in fact this very reason could also boost it. Trade analysts say that the initial sales are a very ‘impressive’ start especially considering Thamma’s release coinciding with Diwali.

Why is Thamma getting so much traction?

Thamma’s early achievements are partly due to the star power of Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna who are playing the protagonists of the movie, while Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the main antagonist and partly due to movie-goers penchant for exploring unfamiliar genres like horror according to Sacnilk. Growing interest in the horror genre is a major contributor as is the willingness to keep up with the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU) which has a score of other movies such as Stree, Bhediya, Munjya and Stree 2. Additionally, the filmmakers insistence that the film is a romantic comedy with supernatural elements rather than a horror comedy with romance could also make it appeal to a broader audience.

Despite Thamma releasing on a major festival, which is often a tricky time for features at the theatre, its bookings predict a hopeful future. If momentum for ticket sales continues as it has been, Thamma could very well score one of the biggest pre-sales for a Bollywood release. These early trends suggest that the movie could rake in Rs 20+ crores going up to 30 in its initial days. The five-day festive window following its release could also boost sales.

Thamma: Story, cast and more

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and produced by Maddock Films, Thamma is the sixth installment in the MHCU. Starring Ayushman Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna as star-crossed lovers who have to combine their strengths to defeat the vampire king Thamma played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The movie plays with folklore, modern horror elements, unique storytelling and packs in humorous one-liners to ensure that film aficionados stay entertained.

It has been given a certification of U/A by the CBFC which opens it up to a wider audience and has a run time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. With a star-studded supporting cast, comprising Paresh Rawal, Sathyaraj and Faisal Mallik and hit music numbers, it has truly touched all bases when it comes to packing a punch at the Box Office.
